Hermaphrodite

HERMAPHRODITE

A Poem by Michael Woodhead
Copyright © 1968, 2024

Upon the night-wind blowing
I hear a death-filled sigh
From someone lost and wand'ring
Someone about to die

I pass between the willows
And weep as I defy
The portals of the DeathRoom
The end of Life is nigh

Within the sobre blackness
I hear a shrill, high call
It summons me to wander
Within a hallowed hall

I enter, then, to blackness
Upon the floor I sprawl
My ears perceive a cry
Which makes my skin, now, crawl

I see within the blackness
A pair of glowing lights
They travel closer to me
I see in the moonlight

A man who is a woman
Endowed with second-sight
For, standing there before me—
A nude hermaphrodite

Bow and arrows at her side
Clothes of silk and white deer hide
Beauty is hers though her right breast is gone
Stalking and hunting—beside her, a fawn

Deep within the forest grove
There I sought her, thee I strove
Beauty is hers though her right breast is gone
Stalking and hunting—beside her, a fawn

Finally, I found her home
Golden hair brushed with a comb
Beauty is hers though her right breast is gone
Stalking and hunting—beside her, a fawn

And I caught her soon enough
She was hardy, she was tough
Beauty is hers though her right breast is gone
Stalking and hunting—beside her, a fawn

Aged Crone

  AGED CRONE

A Poem by Michael Woodhead
Copyright © 1968, 2024

I'm filled with love and peace
oh, cease the endless pain
The rain brings freshness, too
And life to humans new

My heart was filled with woe
I'd go to places deep
Where steep hills I would climb
Until the end of time

I view the aged crone
And phone to warn ahead
Instead, I find I'm lost
And wonder what's the cost

The woman turns to man
To stand, now, at his side
And ride upon a mare
Through darkened, moonlit air

The man now turns to me
To see what I would do
I view the aged crone
And know, now, what she'll own

Abandon

ABANDON

A Poem by Michael Woodhead
Copyright © 1967, 2024

It took but a moment to remove her dress
And then, she ran naked through the waist-high grass
With the freedom of the wind
And the fleetness of a deer
'Twas all that she needed, this tender lass

And the morning-star shone
Upon her sun-kissed breast
Her golden hair streamed behind
She did not rest
For as such she longed to roam
Through the fields of grass and hay
Fleeing till the sun sank in the distant west

Running
Leaping
Strolling
Sunning
Sleeping
Rolling
With the carefree abandon of the wind

Dashing
Fleeing
Laughing
Splashing
Freeing
Quaffing
With the carefree abandon of the wind

The cool, green grass slipped 'tween her whitened toes
Here and there, she stopped to pick a blood red rose
Which was blowing in the breeze
And all the while, she rambled
Naked to the sun
Oblivious to her woes

A Story...

 A STORY...

A Free Verse Poem by Michael Woodhead
Copyright © 1966, 2024

They tell me I'll soon be better
That's nice...

But, I really don't know what's wrong

I've been inside this building for so very long
There are bars on the window
And the door locks on the outside

But, it really doesn't bother me

They tell me I'm sick, you see
But, I don't believe them
After all, I feel quite well
I don't feel sick
Feel swell

But, why do they strap me down when I cry

I heard them talking about me today
They said I was insane
But, that can't be true—can it?
It seems completely inane to me

It's really funny when I think of it
They've strapped me in again, you see
All I did was start laughing
But, I'll stop pretty soon

Then, maybe I can find something to slash my wrists with...

You know, I'm getting sick of this place
Did you ever feel like that..?

Zodanga

ZODANGA

A Poem by Michael Woodhead
Copyright © 1965, 2024

Zodanga, land of woe
Where perils play
Your dragons are so huge
Your warriors hold our clay

Zodanga, O, Zodanga
I would want to leave thee
I cry for my home planet
I cry to leave

Zodanga, I recall
The pleasant times I spent
Stretched on your sandy beach
O, take me, I repent

Zodanga, I would leave
This limbo world of hate
I'd rather face the Earth
Though, now, it is too late

Zodanga, I must stay
And face my future here
I bravely enter in
And wipe away the tear

Zero Ohms & Brannan Lane - Immense Distance

IMMENSE DISTANCE

Richard J Roberts [a.k.a. Zero Ohms]
with Brannan Lane
Space for Music
2003

Immense Distance takes us on a journey to the far reaches of space through the use of very Earth-bound instruments.

Haunting and ethereal, this music is best experienced in a dark room or, perhaps, with earphones, lying on the grass and gazing up to the stars in order to make it a true cosmic voyage.

Only hints of melodies pierce On Currents of Sound, while Into the Nth is reminiscent of Gyorgi Ligeti's Atmosphères journey through the Stargate in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Yet Ohms' and Lane's presentation is more dramatic and foreboding in its feel, with touches of hope endeavoring to push through to our senses. Rather than listen to it, experience Immense Distance.

TRACKLIST:
1. Flows Adrift
2. On A Cosmic Sea
3. Immense Distance
4. On Currents Of Sound
5. Into The Nth

Zero Ohms - Ecstasis

ECSTASIS

Richard J Roberts [a.k.a. Zero Ohms]
with Gordon Rhyne
Space for Music
200

Ecstasis is definitely for a journey inward. Whether you are meditating, or need help sleeping (yes, it does recommend itself as ambient sleep music), this album offers six tracks of vocal and instrumental drones. The brain does an awful lot of mindless and idle 'chattering' to itself, especially when we try to meditate or sleep, and Ecstasis may help to alleviate a lot of it and help you focus on your meditative practice, or help you slowly drift off to needed sleep.

TRACKLIST:
1 Luminosity
2 Seeker
3 Realization
4 Comtemplation
5 Stillpoint
6 Paradox

Waterbone - Orion Prophecy

ORION PROPHECY

Waterbone
New Earth Records
2006

Egyptian singers and electronic instruments join together to create an eclectic mix of haunting tunes that plant the listener in a world of mysticism and ancient magic.

Hymn to Isis, for example, calls out to the Queen of Heaven, with warbling voices and a driving beat that carry modern man to the world of ancient Egypt. Continue with indigenous drums, tambourines, disembodied voices and stringed instruments intermingled with psychedelic and compelling backbeats.

Orion Prophecy is an exciting listen.

TRACKLIST:
1. Book of Stars
2. King of Cups

5. Eastern Star
6. Keeper of the Gates of Mars
7. Sky Gods

Wah! - Jai Jai Jai

 JAI JAI JAI

Wah!
Music Design
2004

This absolutely marvelous and melodic album proved a delight to listen to, sing along with, and gives the listener an opportunity to relax in its rhythmic tunes, from the round-like refrains of Bolo Ram to the soft chant of Gayatri.

Bolo Ram consists of several distinct mantras, and begins with Wah!'s solo voice accompanied by the harmonium, then segues into a more up-tempo rhythmic praise tune with a jazz guitar and shaker, then into a more responsive choral effort complete with a men's choir and additional instruments. As the end nears, the chants grow slower and quieter, bringing the listener to a devotional attitude.

With Sri Krishna, Wah! gives us a more bluesy approach, not something one would expect for an Indian chant, but which works nonetheless. Also very reminiscent of the musical chants of the Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s (for those of us who happen to remember—and perhaps miss—those times of Flower Power and Free Love).

Shyam Bolo Jai and Durge are two songs of praise, the first to Krishna, and the latter to the Divine Mother. Shyam Bolo Jai is light, almost playful in its presentation, while Durge is more solemn, but still delightful.

The album ends with Gayatri, a light, flowing musical meditation on the three planes of existence—mortal, immortal and divine.

My one complaint? Wah! presents one song in English—What She Has to Give—a light jazzy blues number that, to be quite frank, I really don't think fits in with the rest of the musical offerings. In spite of the fact that it's written about a saint from southern India, this song's style doesn't suit the up-beat pop devotional aspect of the album. However, for more of the jazz-blues music, check out Wah!'s Opium album. That's sure to please, too.

Wah! has traveled to many countries, notably India and Africa, and these places have influenced much of her music. She tours yoga centers, festivals, and conferences where she offers chanting, and stories and teachings to elevate audiences worldwide, as well as music from her other albums. In addition, Wah! has opened for Courtney Love, headlined the Cultural Arts Festival in Yuba City, and has appeared on VTV Vancouver Morning Television.

Wah! and her band present music with a blend of pop, reggae and world styles, well worth a listen at any time.

TRACKLIST:
1. Bolo Ram
2. Sri Krishna
3. Om Mani Padme Hum
4. What She Has to Give
5. Shyam Bolo Jai
6. Durge
7. Gayatri

Vicki Logan - The Ride

 THE RIDE

Vicki Logan
Carvic, Inc.
2004

I must say I was quite surprised and very impressed by The Ride. Ten very beautiful songs are presented in a variety of styles and rhythms, yet all of them combine to form a cohesive whole.

As Vicki says, "I wanted to describe the passage of time, as I experience it, in terms of music. I also wanted to show the many sides of who I am using elements from different styles of music because that, to me, is how most of us are. We are not represented by any one particular thing...but by many things creating a whole unique being."

Vicki begins with a very melodic and pop-like The Dance of the Sun that sweeps over the soul, relaxing and inviting us to become inspired.

When I first heard A Piece of My Rainbow, I could have sworn Kenny G was playing the sax; but, no, it was Kenni H(olman) performing the very mellow, but uplifting melody.

Follow this with a rather melancholic, medieval Celtic-sounding piece called Forbidden Love, and then a more modern up-tempo beat-driven Colors in Motion

Just to Be with You faintly reflects a light jazz influence; then the title song brings a more New Age instrumental feel.

Further jazz and heavy pop touches highlight An Engagement with Time and almost deliver a Kitaro-like atmosphere.

Board the virtual train for Finding Freedom (The Freedom Express) and be carried down the musical train tracks to the plaintive Don't Be Afraid, after which we reach the pensive and serene music of The End of the Day.

These original compositions are uplifting and soul-stirring, grabbing the listener by the ears from the first song to the last, and almost leaving one breathless but fulfilled by the end of the journey.

Pick up your copy and go along for The Ride. I'll be taking it quite often.

Frank Woodhead's Early Years

I just lately found this and managed to get it typed up.
My dad shared this info with me back in late 1999, early 2000

just before his death in March.
It covers the things he remembered from the time
he was born up to when he went to India at the
beginning of World War II.]

Frank Woodhead’s Early Years
As Told to His Son
Michael Woodhead

1916 - Birth
Born 29 August
Rochdale Infirmary
Mother: Mary Ann Paley, age 42
Twin sister, Lily, also born

1918 – Age 2
Lily dies.
(Note: His parents had to choose which child lived and they chose Frank.)
Frank sees or has a vision of Lily in the coffin in a little alcove.
Two horses with plumes and a carriage with plumes drives up.
His Aunt Emma receives the coffin from his mother and then goes off in the carriage.

World War One ends

1921 – Age 5
Frank's father buys him a scooter for Christmas Day.
He hits a step with it and it breaks it in half.
He gets a broken nose and his stepsisters laugh at him.

Amy Johnson takes a solo flight (the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia)

1923 – Age 7
Sisters were flappers.
Jack Rhodes (married to one of Frank’s stepsisters?) tells stories of World War I in the Carlton Dance Hall

1924 – Age 8
Frank becomes Wolf Cub.
At this time, women can't go into bars; they have to go into the ‘best room’ or parlor.

1925 – Age 9
Frank’s mother sings while drunk in the pub,  and then staggers through the muck and mire of a steel yard with him leading her home.

His mother hides under the stairs during thunderstorms

[Note: Fighting with his drunken family put Frank off smoking and drinking]

1926 – Age 10
Christian Endeavor Party is formed

One of Frank’s older step- brothers buys out of the army when he hears they're going to India (the British Army have been there since 1857)

Frank starts singing tenor

1929 – Age 13
Frank goes to Jimmy Duckworth’s grocery store to pick things up for his mother.

1930 – Age 14
Although he wants to do so, Frank can't take piano lessons

Frank is old enough, now, to be eligible for the workplace so he starts painting, using a ladder since the boss has a bad foot.
Frank is also afraid of heights...
He learns mural painting and gilding.
He works here for seven years. (1930-1937)

1931 – Age 15
Frank has his first serious girlfriend.
She is from Bolton.
She wears a white brimmed hat with a rose.
When he brings the girl home, his mother says, “She's a tart, get rid of her!”

Then Frank brings home a Salvation Army girl.
His mother says, “What faith are you?”
The girl says “Anabaptist”.
Frank's mom says, “Get out!”

At an open-air gospel meeting, Frank meets Jackie Fielding who seems like a tomboy to him.

[Note: I am not sure who this ‘Jackie Fielding’ is. There was a famous English actress from his home town of Rochdale by this name, but she wasn’t born until 1967)

1932 – Age 16
On Whitsuntide day, they have a flag procession down the street.
One of the flags wraps itself around the power lines and shorts out the power for miles.

1933 – Age 17
Frank goes for a ride on a charabanc

1935 – Age 19
Frank becomes a member of the Bethel Evangelistic Society where he is a gospel singer in the summer

In the winter, he snow-shovels for the city.

1936 – Age 20
Frank helps start up the Bethel Evangelistic Church.

This year, he first sees Ivy. He is conducting an open-air meeting and she walks by with her mother.

[Note: Coincidentally they lived four doors away from each other even though they’d never seen each other before]

1937 – Age 21
Frank meets Ivy again at an evangelistic campaign in Bacup.
He goes home for dinner with a Mrs Hodden (Hotten?) and Ivy.
A few days later, he goes to Ivy's for supper.

Ivy has to pick up her father's wages, otherwise he would spend it all on beer.

Ivy works in Moss Textile Mill as a beamer

1938 – Age 22
Frank volunteers as a firefighter.
One day a copper comes and asks for Frank.
He is taken in a patrol car to a building where he is called up for full-time firefighting service until after he marries in 1940.

He joins the Rochdale Auxiliary Fire Service.

1939 – Age 23
World War II starts

1940 – Age 24
March 30, he married Ivy

In September he is called into the military.

Frank goes to Leaven on the Yorkshire coast and joins the Yorkshire Beach Defense Regiment.

Their first meal includes one herring, one potato, and some canned peaches.
They clean the dishes with sand.

Frank is put in charge of ‘troops’ and has his own little classroom

He teaches rifle drill.

He is sent to Stamford Bridge, York.
He is sent to Gloucester.
He is sent to Tewksbury.
He is given  embarkation leave to return home since Ivy's father dies.

One day when the men are standing in line, Winston Churchill and the King drive by so fast in a car, they can’t be seen. Someone yells, “Three cheers: hip-hip—”, but all the men standing around yell back “Boo!”

1941 – Age 25
Nights are often spent at the church singing.
He sits with the young women.
One night, someone hears him singing and he ends up singing parts with the vicar's daughters.

1942 – Age 26
February-March
Frank sails from Glasgow on the Empress of Canada.
It takes eight to ten weeks to sail to India.

March-June
On board ship, they receive half-rations since they are not expected.
They stop off in Cape Town, Africa.

A Mrs Betty Juffernbrook of Voluntary Services stops and asks if Frank and his mates would like to come for dinner, which they do.

Afterwards, they tour Cape Town, first in the woman’s car, and then by themselves.

LIVE!

Nicholas Gunn / Johannes Linstead
Loren Gold / David Arkenstone
Gemini Sun Records
2008

Although I've notated this as light jazz, it's really much more than that.

Four extremely talented and well-known artists present a varied selection of original instrumental songs in a live concert. Energetic and moving, all the selections here are melodic and wonderful to listen to again and again.

Flute music by Nicholas Gunn; piano by Loren Gold, guitar by Johannes Linstead; and compositions by David Arkenstone.

Inter-weaved with the music are candid interviews with the artists in which they explain how they came to write the pieces they perform along with other band members.

What I really enjoyed about this album is that along with the CD, there also came with it a DVD of the concert which helped to make the music more real, more alive, more enjoyable. It's unfortunate that many more CDs don't come with videos.

From My Journal : 30 July 2007

 30 JULY
Monday
    ■ From my journal:

“There may come a time in every writer's life when he realizes he's been trying to write in the wrong genre.
“Once again, it all comes down to passion—what am I passionate about? What do I like to watch, read, and immerse myself in?
“As I've looked at my past or gone through my autobiography blog, I've come to realize that historicals are not for me, much as I would love to write them. For one thing, I hated history in school. It was a boring subject filled with dates, and people I really didn't care about.
“So why did I think I could write historical fiction? Because certain aspects of ancient history fascinated me, and I thought interesting stories that might be told during certain periods of time.
“However, that isn't really where my passion and interests lie. Rather, I've rediscovered that it's heroic fantasy and high adventure that I enjoy—the works of H Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs in particular (emulating them, I wrote The Hidden City of A-TenReturn to A-Ten, and Zorab in the late 1960s) and also the science fiction of Robert A Heinlein.
“Why did I slowly move away from these? What caused the shift in my interests? When?
“One reason I know is that when I became a Christian in 1973, some well-meaning but misguided Christians said I should throw away anything I'd created before becoming a Christian because all that stuff was ‘of the devil’.
“Not knowing any better at the time, I blindly did as they suggested; I've regretted it ever since.
“Another reason is that they told me that fantasy has no place in a Christian’s life. So, I gradually left my fantasy worlds behind. To be replaced by what?—an emptiness I couldn't define, and a pressure to pursue ‘Christian’ subjects that didn't really interest me.
“As I rebelled against my parents sending me to Sunday school when I was fifteen, so I rebelled against the religiosity of Christianity after ten years.
“For several years, I wandered in a creative void which I endeavored to fill for several years with erotic stories, book reviews, and new age music reviews.
“Then, one day, a woman I met in a dry-cleaning business next to work came to see me and asked if I'd be interested in joining an  Advanced Dungeons & Dragons™ group.
“Would I!? You couldn't get me there fast enough!
“Enthralled once again by fantasy, I soon began writing some AD&D adventures, not necessarily for publication, but for the fun of playing them with the group—which I did.
“Out of these adventures, one of my characters began to grow on me—Sheel Chandra, who eventually appeared in four erotic short stories as ‘Solomon Magus’.
“Soon after that, I began creating his world, Arabah, and then I realized I had the beginnings of a novel and, perhaps, a series of novels.
“For the 3-day Novel Contest, I wrote the embryonic version, Solomon Magus, which I thereafter worked on and finally self-published in 2006 as Wizard of Arabah.
“In order to describe the book, I used the term ‘historical fantasy’ simply because, although a fantasy, it did have some historical elements.
“That was a book which, although it was hard work, proved to be a lot of fun to write.
“So why did I think I could write historicals? Who knows? But I need to, I must return to the genres that first caught my interest and carried me away into the worlds of my imagination. With that in mind, I want to abandon Gladiatrix for now, and concentrate on the second book in The Scrolls of Solomon Magus series.”

[NOTE: A couple of days later, I returned to Gladiatrix...]  <sigh>

Michael Laird, Natalia Lincoln, and Mariko comprise the main ingredients of Unto Ashes, an ethereal, dirge-like group that has some very impressive songs and presentations.

The delicate vocals of the two women complement those of Michael and, although overall there isn't a lot of diversity in the music, nevertheless Grave Blessings does offer a penumbric atmosphere of melancholia.

From the folk song styled Four Loom Weaver to the more world-flavored Frühling, there are some enchanting musical pieces to which to listen.

Desiring to emulate an 'old soul in a new body', he blends the ancient sounds of these countries with the electronica of modern technology to create vibrant and evocative music. Dances and chants, meditations and prayers—all are presented with an upbeat, albeit percussive sound. Great listening!
