From My Autobiography : 1980 : Age 33

6 JANUARY
Sunday
Attic Records returns a cassette of a few of my songs as they are “not interested in getting involved at this time”.

20 FEBRUARY
Wednesday
Discouraged at work because the change of location has also brought unwanted changes in work conditions, I leave Concord Canada and find a new job in the print shop of Nu-West Homes.

For one thing, it now took me over an hour on the bus to get to work instead of less than thirty minutes. For another, the overall  atmosphere now seemed to be more business-like rather than the family-oriented environs of the previous location. However, Eric Pedersen, General Manager of Concord Canada, wrote me a nice letter to thank me for my five years of service to the company.

10 APRIL
Thursday
I form the Theatre of the Renaissance, an amateur artistic, dramatic, and musical society.

The name was a blatant rip-off translation of the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris, but one which I felt suited my vision at the time since Alphonse Mucha and Sarah Bernhardt inspired me artistically and theatrically.

16 APRIL
Wednesday
I write to Elite [a men’s magazine at the time] for writing guidelines even though I don’t know what I’d even write for them.

22 MAY
Thursday
I begin research work for a novel series, Canada—The Epic Saga of a Nation; and a short story, The Woman and the Warrior.

So far, I’ve done nothing on these.

30 MAY
Friday
An article on me and my aspirations for the Theatre of the Renaissance appears in the Alberta Report magazine.

27 JUNE
Friday
Through the Theatre of the Renaissance, I produce and direct two plays — The Game by W A Poovey, and The Greatest Play Ever Written by Barbara Hudson Dudley.

Since one of the the players dropped out at the last minute, I ended up having to play his role

JUNE
I write to the Performing Arts Center at Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral for information on what courses they’re offering.

10, 17, 24 AUGUST
Sundays
Under the auspices of the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation Department, I perform three concerts on the 8th Avenue Mall during a special entertainment program. I’m paid $75 in total for the three performances.

SEPTEMBER
I design a couple of covers for a magazine I would like to produce called either Sion, or The Rose of Sharon, a periodical I see devoted to l’Art Beauté. Nothing comes of it.

For some reason, publishing an art magazine always interested me. I think much of the enthusiasm for it came from looking at various European and American art magazine covers from the late 1800s, most notably, ‘Jugend’. I found them creatively inspiring and wanted to do something similar for the present day.

I volunteer to be president of the Vista Heights Home & School Association. During the next year, we arrange to have a new playground built in the schoolyard.

23 SEPTEMBER
Tuesday
I receive a response from Famous Artists Schools after I send in one of the ‘tests’ from a magazine.

The course and materials were available, but again, at $250.00 it was too expensive for me to afford.

21 OCTOBER
Tuesday
I sing at a Women's Aglow meeting and design a poster for the event.

NOVEMBER
I join the Calgary branch of the Association of Christian Artists.

28 NOVEMBER
Friday
I produce and direct a concert at the W R Castell Library auditorium. The program features my own compositions, as well as music by the Gospel Chariot.

10 DECEMBER
Wednesday
Capitol Records returns my cassette submission of songs because they are unable to use any of my material.

12 DECEMBER
Friday
Origins magazine uses one of my drawings as a cover, and I'm paid $10 for it.

31 DECEMBER
Friday
Ray and I receive $12.32 each in royalties from his recordings of my songs.

Although I’ve played 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars and this 6-string electric guitar, I prefer the latter for the low fret board and the 12-string for the mellower sound.
