Scott August - Lost Canyons

LOST CANYONS

Scott August
Cedar Mesa Music
2007

Once again the hauntingly beautiful sound of flutes permeates my space.

Melancholy, expressive, and deeply emotional, these tunes resonate with memories of times gone by that touch the present.

Designed to aurally express Nature as experienced in the canyons of the Southwest, some exquisitely performed tunes help the listener visualize such things as sweeping mesas, birds, and the ever-changing elements of the weather.

With a minimum of backing instruments and sounds, August focuses on creating sound pictures with his variety of flutes, and draws the listener into them with him.

Rasa - Temple of Love

 TEMPLE OF LOVE

Rasa
(Kim Waters & Hans Christian)
New Earth Records
2006

And yet another beautiful, undulating selection of Indian spiritual songs made quite accessible to Western ears.

We would be hard pressed to find a better blend of instruments and vocals than Kim Waters' voice and Hans Christian's instruments since they complement each other so well. Soft and ethereal, calm and meditative, they create a mesmerizing program ideal for relaxation and meditation.

With such a smooth blend of music and lyrics, we lose track of time as we become lost in the exotic, and could we say almost erotic mélange of rhythms and melodious chants.

Phil Thornton - Edge of Dreams

 EDGE OF DREAMS

Phil Thornton
New World Music
1986 / 2006

Originally released in 1986, Edge of Dreams was one of the first albums I heard that really got me turned on to New Age music, even though the term now encompasses a vast array of divergent styles.

Nevertheless, the sweeping soundscapes with their oftentimes other-dimensional approach excited me in such a way that I couldn't seem to get enough of this form of music. It was as if I had heard something for which I'd been searching a long time.

Holding true to its title, the album escorts us through musically variegated ambient dreamworlds, creating an almost timeless but relaxing environment with an assortment of divers instruments, natural and electronic.

The thing that amazes me about this type of music is that I never get tired of listening to it; it never becomes boring, and it never seems to date itself. Even twenty years later, the music is still just as fresh and heart-stirring as it was when I first relished its modulations.

Twenty years from now, I will still enjoy it.

Peter Sterling - Shadow, Mist & Light

SHADOW, MIST & LIGHT

Peter Sterling
Real Music
2005

One day, while on a visit to Coeur d'Alene back in the mid-1990s, I happened to stop into a New Age store and heard some beautiful harp music playing over the speakers. When I asked who it was, the salesperson replied, "Hilary Stagg".

Almost ten years later, I discovered someone with the same magic on the harp who was influenced/guided by Hilary.

However, Peter is by no means a 'knock-off' of Hilary; indeed, he possesses his own style and interpretive vision.

Shadow, Mist & Light is a very inspiring group of melodies that uplift the spirit, filling it with hope and joy. Like a zephyr of sound, the music of this album will sweep you away for a journey of light, ethereal relaxation.

Peter plays a custom made Lyon and Healy electric Troubadour harp, and is supplemented on this album by a variety of musicians, singers and instruments.

A delightful listen.

Paul Anthony Adams - New Beginnings

NEW BEGINNINGS

Paul Anthony Adams
New World Music
2005

Soft and relaxing is a good way to describe this album, and therefore ideal for meditation, healing, and in any situation or setting that requires stillness and inspiration.

Primarily synthesizers and flute take the listener on a journey with Paul, as he sets his own experiences and travels to music.

"I didn't set out to write the album with a particular theme but what developed naturally as a common thread was the finding of peace and inspiration in various special places, times and spiritual concepts which have become special to me over the years".

Two of my favorites are Caldey and Chez Nous, but all of the tunes on New Beginnings can be the beginning of your own relaxation phase.

2. Maundy Thursday
3. The Coming of The Light
4. New Year
5. Caldey

Patrick Kelly - Beyond the Horizon

BEYOND THE HORIZON

Patrick Kelly
New World Music
2005

Patrick Kelly's style of music is one of the reasons I began listening to New Age music in the first place—beautiful flowing soundscapes of melodies and instruments; and he joins a legion of talented artists such as Herb Ernst, David Phillips, and Bruce BecVar.

By far, the title track is my favorite for this very reason, but that certainly doesn't detract from the rest of the selections.

"The theme of the album is that beyond the horizon there is a mystical world where one's imagination is the only limit." - Patrick Kelly

Beyond the Horizon contains fluid melodies perfect for relaxation, healing, and meditation.

Padma Previ - Divine Visions

DIVINE VISIONS

Padma Previ
New Earth Records
2007

This has got to be one of the smoothest recordings I've heard in a long time—fifty minutes of gentle singing and music that blends "the sultry rhythms of the Near East with traditional devotional Indian mantras". Padma Previ has a very hypnotic voice that draws the listener into each of the selections she sings. Fans of Deva Primal who are not that familiar with Padma Previ will certainly enjoy listening to Divine Visions.

Omkar - Shaku

SHAKU

Omkar
(The Music Of Osho—aka Rajneesh Chandra Mohan)
CD Baby
2004

"...I'd like to say, very simply: I invite you to listen. I do not write music for relaxation, or for dancing, but for the very pleasure of listening."

Swami Anand Omkar achieves just that on Shaku. But then he offers us something more.

Through the musical presentation of six compositions, Omkar takes us through the existence of Shaku, a being, or figure created from imagination into which life has been imbued. Shaku's Birth alludes to Shaku's possible origin—perhaps rising from the sea as the first creatures did millions of years ago. Musical dolphins and whales cry to each other, encouraging the new creature to venture forth into the vast world beyond the ocean, to experience life, as they cannot do.

Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? Shaku's Theme touches on these questions as this melancholy melody manifests Shaku's quandary about his reason for existence. Occasionally cheerful, at other times mournful, sometimes rushing about, and still again, leisurely in tempo, this theme reflects modern man's day-to-day life in his quest for meaning.

Ah, the exuberance of youth—Shaku's inquisitiveness on one hand, and yet his false sense of pride as he thinks he knows everything there is to know. This is presented musically, and quite uniquely in God Bless Ya. In the River of Life, Shaku tests the waters first with his feet, feeling the warmth and depth of his experiences; then, gradually, he wades in deeper until, at length, he swims back and forth, sometimes with strong strokes against the current, at other times with gentle strokes as he is carried along by the swift-moving stream. Once in a while, he leaves the river to sit and reflect on what he's experienced, to meditate and decide which direction he will take in the future.

From atop the Skyscraper, Shaku can look back over his life—where he came from; on the things he's done, or neglected to do; the friends and acquaintances he's met and with whom he's shared Life. And it seems such a short time. And so we bid Farewell to Shaku, and thank him for the time he's spent with us, sharing his life, his thoughts, and his music.

Dramatic and rhythmic, light-hearted and solemn, Omkar's music reminded me occasionally of the compositions of the blind Classicist composer, Moondog. Yet, Omkar offers a singularly different expression of music, and Shaku is well worth a listen for its musical representation of Man's life.

1. Shaku's Birth
2. Shaku's Theme
3. God Bless Ya
4. River of Life

Nick Davis - Tales of a Summer Past

 TALES OF A SUMMER PAST

Nick Davis
Nick Davis Music
2005

With the first bars of Tales of a Summer Past, I was immediately drawn in to this marvelous musical work.

The opening piece is both cinematic and symphonic, symbolizing the Present to me and aptly named A New Season Dawns, followed by some enchanting, sprightly melodies that represent the Past.

Nick has managed to create an amazing mix of musical styles, both Western and European, all of which blend together with an endearing charm.

I particularly enjoyed the upbeat and rhythmic Harvest Feast that certainly makes you want to get up and dance; and the musically playful Reminisce. Equally appealing are When a Caged Bird Sings and First Embrace, followed by the plaintive A Moment with You

Although the album ends somewhat abruptly with a very short reprise of Farewell to a Friend, one knows that Tales of a Summer Past will certainly not be the last we hear of this dynamic composer.

All in all, a delightful introduction to anyone interested in neo-classical and contemporary classical music.

From the liner notes-- "Punctuated by introspective moments, it is vibrant an evocative. Nick has attempted to recapture the ambiance and energy of his acclaimed...Tears of the Moon , yet create an album that explores the neo-classical far more deftly than Eclipse..."

Nick Davis - Eclipse

ECLIPSE : Music For the Soul

Nick Davis
Nick Davis Music
2003

Eclipse is a follow-up to Nick's previous Tears of the Moon. Bordering on a contemporary classical style, the compositions are very plain and simple, with only the bare essentials of musical accompaniment as the music crosses back and forth at times from majestic and cinematic to quiet and meditative, but still highly original and naturally graceful.

Anthem of the Heart proclaims the start of the album with a trumpet fanfare, coupled with violin strains reminiscent of a parlor orchestra. Following this, Nick drops rather abruptly into two slow, peaceful pieces: Many Years Past and Yearning. The tempo picks up again on Emerald Hills, perhaps reflecting on the countryside of Ireland since the music has traces with an Irish lilt. At the same time, it also reminds me of a sprightly tune that could have been written for a Broadway musical. Very enjoyable.

The tunes on Eclipse seem to represent Nick's musical views on various experiences in his life, not necessarily things that happened to him, but perhaps places he's been, scenes that made an impression on him—Picnic in Provence, and View of the Bay, for example—and he's created some moving musical moments.

Nick released two earlier albums, Make it Happen and Deja Vu in 1985. A year later, he formed the group known as De Vie and they released Spice of Life.

After releasing a third solo album, Dress to Impress, in 1987, he left the recording industry for a while to work on other projects. 1992 saw his return with A Chance to Dream and then Tears of the Moon in 1997.

Fans of Windham Hill artists will certainly enjoy this album. I would certainly like to hear how Nick would fare on an album of synth music; I think it would be a pleasurable experience and no doubt would be something similar to the works of Ray Dretske, .Bruce BecVar, or Herb Ernst.

My Favourite: Spring Garden

Elsewhere, I've also reviewed two other albums that Nick has created -- Candescence and Tales of a Summer Past.

TRACKLIST:
1. Forever More

Nick Davis - Candescence

CANDESCENCE

Nick Davis
Nick Davis Music
2006

Beginning with the opening track, one is struck almost immediately by the neo-classical sound of the composition and arrangements of Nick's music.

Occasionally departing into a contemporary jazz sound, but utilizing orchestral instruments, like Flight to Freedom, the music has a light, bright feel to it.

Sometimes whimsical, like In My Heart, or melancholy, like Yearning, or soft and subtle like Lullaby for Madeline, the whole album is a delightful smorgasbord of interesting and eclectic pieces, each quite different, but still bound together by Nick's masterful mixing and arranging.

Some tunes evoke strange pictures, but perhaps that is my overactive imagination, which has a tendency to see things as cinematic images—A Lover's Lament, for example, could work extremely well as a slow Gothic waltz. Return of the Brave, while not majestic sounding enough for real life, would work in an animated movie that included toy soldiers.

But then again, perhaps that is the way in which Nick paints his musical images, creating scenes in our minds which might not necessarily have been there in the first place.

Overall, a beautiful and carefully-wrought album of contemporary music.

4. In My Heart
5. Yearning
6. A Lover's Lament
